Clean-Flo, Canoe Club, Rec Director, This, That & The Other Thing: Countless Reasons for Lake’s Closure May Come to an End

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Hammonton News reports today that the Hammonton Lake may just, wait for it, reopen to swimmers this summer. Yes, we know, you’ve heard it over and over again every year. Maybe its different this time:

Council also is expected to hire a lifeguard at its meeting next week. Then, town officials will begin testing the water around the beach area for fecal coliform. If the water passes the test for four straight days, the lake could re-open to swimmers, Councilman Jerry Barberio said.

Don’t exactly cancel your shore vacations, but we’d keep your swimming trunks handy, eventually its gotta open back up to swimmers, right?

Happy Independence Day

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Almost 250 years ago this day, the second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence, seperating America from control of Britian.

Today, we celebrate with barbeques, fireworks, and beaches. Here’s to a safe holiday for all of you, and remember where we came from, and what gave so many of us and our families the opportunity to live a better life than where we came from.

Hammonton Pink Slips Four Officers; Six Town Employees

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Hammonton makes it official, they’re cutting four police officers from the city payrolls. The Atlantic City Press reports on who will lose their jobs:

Officers William Kurtz, Jason Rigby, Jonathon O’Neil and Robert Zbikowski will be laid off as of June 21 and lose their medical benefits June 30, Plotkin said.

No word on which town employees lost their jobs, but no doubt the names will be people many of us know.

According to this and other reports, Hammonton and the Police Union continue to negotiate to try to come to a conclusion. The Gazette reported this week that Town Council would like the negotiations to be broadcast on public television. This blogger can’t see what good would come of that. The best laid plans often come from heated, private deliberation. It saves face for both sides, and who wants to look in the chef’s kitchen before the meal is cooked anyway?

This is certainly sad news for all ten town employees, but its bad news for the Hammonton Police, the Town, and its residents. H-town is already four officers short, with no plan to fill those lost positions. Four more makes the force short eight able bodies. As far as Town employees, we’ve been running on a bare bones city-wide staff for some time now. But what do taxpayers expect? We’ve got a new Town Hall and the Canoe Club to pay for.

To tell you the truth, timing is on the side of Hammonton. After all, crime isn’t so bad. And the child molestor who tried to carjack the mom and child, the guy with the explosives and meth lab, and the hostage taker in the all night stand-off, all happened BEFORE these guys are getting laid off. Now that we got them our of the way, who needs the police?

update: We’ve been pondering this all day, and decided there is only one option to defeat the juggernaut ticket the Republicans will be fielding this year:

Hammonton Council Submits Budget that Cuts 10, Furloughs the Rest

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

From the AC Press this morning:

The Town Council voted at a special meeting Thursday night to submit a plan to the state that calls for 10 municipal workers to be laid off. But it also voted to submit plans for mandatory and voluntary furlough days at the same time

Mayor Didonato noted that in negotiations with town workers, he wants them to take a two year pay freeze so they can avoid the layoffs. If the layoffs go through, four police will be cut along with several town workers.

Hammonton Schools Lose 14.7% of their State Aid, $2 Million Slashed

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Just posted on the Courier Post, Hammonton will lose $2 million of its state aid, a cut of over 14% form last year’s aid. In total, the cut is just under 5% of the total budget.

Proportionally, Hammonton got a little more cut than most towns in Atlantic County. Absecon lost 38% of its state aid. The smallest chunk came from Mullica Twp.
