District 9 Assemblyman Van Pelt and 30+ Others Arrested in FBI Corruption Probe; Assembly Minority Leader Calls for Van Pelt to Resign; Update: Township Fires Van Pelt from $85K Administrator Job

Republican Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt was arrested along with 30 other political figures, including several Democrat Mayors and appointees in a far-reaching corruption probe. Read more about the FBI’s sting at Atlantic City Press:

They include Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt, R-Ocean, Atlantic, Burlington. Van Pelt served more than a decade as mayor of Ocean Township and stepped down from the Township Committee in February. He is serving his first term in the Assembly and is currently running for re-election.

Robert J. Cooke, an FBI agent, swore in an affidavit that Van Pelt accepted a bribe in return for promises to expedite environmental approvals for a real estate development in Waretown. The developer served as a cooperating witness in the investigation, according to the FBI statement.

According to the affidavit, the developer told Van Pelt during a February meeting that he was not a member of the Democratic or Republican parties, but was a member of the “green” party and that “green is cash,” meaning that the he was willing to pay cash for Van Pelt’s assistance.

The probe spreads well beyond Van Pelt, spanning into North Jersey and Brooklyn. More to come as its released…

The committee voted to strip him of the $85,000 job and his $5,000 position as affordable housing administrator as well as called on the township attorney, Michael Mouber, to probe his tenure in the township.
