Small Plane Crashes Near Hammonton Airport, Pilot Walks Away

A small plane crash landed near Hammonton Airport, in my family’s backyard actually, after his engine apparently died right after takeoff. He was able to find the blueberry field and glide the plane down, stopping just short of Myrtle Street.

The pilot walked away from the aircraft after landing, but from visual inspection, the plane had heavy damage.

I am glad no one was hurt, on ground and in air, but get used to having this kind of stuff happen more and more frequently now that the airport is being overhauled and more traffic will come in. That is the goal of putting in a new restaurant and encouraging pilots to fly into Hammonton. I remember in another town a pilot was forced to land in a public high school field. Luckily, it was on a Saturday. I still remember John Heinz crashing into that school in PA. I don’t like having the Red Baron flying over my house.

How much damage was done to the area? Is it true that over $2,000,000 million dollars worth of damage was sustained by the farmer?

No, the only damage was to a bunch of blueberry bushes. Sweet, sweet, jersey berries. Those poor bushes lost their lives to help slow the plane down during its landing.

When is the restaurant supposed to open? Need a new place to go to – I am tired of flying into Skymanor (N40) and South Jersey (VAY) for burgers – Although one cannot get tired of South Jersey’s Tuscany sandwiches (Prosciutto & cheese on their special panini bread).

If you have to spend hundreds of dollars worth of gas to get a good burger shouldn’t you be driving a car or walking?

Like that famous guy said, “it’s not the destination, but the journey” – Plus, too dangerous to drive around here with all those Jersey drivers on the road :-) But seriously though, FYI, it costs me about $15 in gas to fly to Skymanor and $30 for South Jersey – Last time I tried the movies (5 year ago), it cost me more than that just for some popcorn, candy, and soda. It’s not as expensive as you think – You all come on out and give it a try. You’ll like it, a lot, I am sure…

Is it true that if a plane crashes into your house that its your homeowners insurance that covers it and not the pilots insurance? If so, then why should we encourage more pilots to come to Hammonton that’ll drive our homeowners insurance up if planes crash more often in our area.

If a car crashes into your home what insurance pays for it. Better get all the cars off the road too.

geezerdude, First the auto insurance of the driver if they have coverage pays for damages up to a certain limit then the rest is paid by one’s own homeowners insurance. That’s NOT the case with planes from what I’ve heard. Do you know different or are you just throwing a joke in for humor.

To all of you asking about the damage and cost to the farmer…….Do you not care about the person who died as a result of this tragic accident. Rest in peace to my beloved friend.

How long has the airport been there and how many times has a plane crashed into a house? Sounds like chicken little with the sky is starting to fall.

The damage to the field was very minimal, 70 plants to be exact.

Glad to see the gentlemen walked away safely.

geezer, i merely asked a question of which you don’t want to answer because I wasn’t sure if a home is covered by a small plane crashing into it. I’m renewing my policy and I wanted to find out. My agent informed me that my policy DIDN’t so now I have one that does. Not all homeowners policies are the same. People need to know what they’re paying for and what’s exempt from coverage. If a plane “accidently” crashes into your home than most policies cover it. If a terrorist crashes a plane into your house, you’re NOT covered.

I’ve lived for thirty years in Lester which was right in the path from planes leaving and arriving at Philly and never had insurance. Moved here 25 years ago and I’m still in the flight path of Hammonton Airport and it never crossed my mind to get insurance. If you are so worried go right ahead and get the inurance but I would never waste my money on it.

I believe that the runway is 3000 ft long and can handle small jets…and to all the naysayers of a airport expansion, it brings in more business, jobs and money to our town.
