Hammonton Blue Devils Fight for Championship, Update: Hammonton Wins!

It’s judgement day for Hammonton’s Varsity Squad. Take it away, Atlantic City Press:

We have to be ready,” Lancetta said. “It’s not going to be a picnic. There’s going to be some adversity. When you get to this level, no matter who you play, you’re going to face a quality football team.”

Timber Creek is trying to win its first South Jersey title since the school opened in 2001.

The Chargers are No. 7 in The Press’ Elite 11. Timber Creek will have a size advantage on the offensive and defensive lines. Chargers running back Nahjee Gibson and wide receiver Damiere Byrd are both Division I college prospects with the speed to score any time they touch the ball.

“We can’t get discouraged if they get some first downs,” Lancetta said. “They’re going to make their yards, but how many times can we get off the field without giving up points? That’s what our philosophy is going to be.”

This may be Hammonton’s best team since 1996. The Blue Devils are a senior-oriented group. They are No. 2 in The Press’ Elite 11.

Go Blue! Here’s the Press wrapup on the game:

Hey is the school board and administration ever going go get rid of Joe Berenato so we can actually have safe bus drivers. He can point fingers at the board all he wants. He’s the head of the transportation department he should deal with his problems. When more than one parent is complaining there is a problem. Should have addressed it before there was a need for a new bus now.

And that’s the problem with that whole school. They pass the buck and the blame up the line instead of dealing with it. Stop worrying if everyone was invited to a birthday party or not and start taking care of our children when they are in your care. Every bus driver should be drug tested at least twice a year and the department head should make it a point to ride with each of them at least once a month. If he hears complaints he should be on that bus that very day talking to the driver and riding for a few days to see what the problem is. Not blowing it off as the parent is nuts or the kid is bad. Especially after repeated phone calls from not one parent but lots of parents about the same person. You failed Berenato you didn’t do your job and you didn’t protect our kids.

Whether the driver was his cousin or not doesn’t matter. He doesn’t supervise any of them. He waits untl something happens and then blames the school board. They can’t fix it if they don’t know about it. But then again he’s only there waiting to retire.

The neighbors near the crash scene ALL say that bus driver speeds on Central. It’s a miracle the bus didn’t flip over. There was no ice, no rain, nothing that day. What was the reason for the accident that could have killed the few kids on board. Most of the kids were Mexican so you won’t see those parents complaining to the school board.

Joe does an excellent job for our children and for the taxpayers. He keeps the costs down and makes money for the district by picking up other kids in other districts since we go past there anyway. He helps the school board keep our taxes down.
What would you have him do, drive all of the buses himself?
    Accidents happen.
I have never seen Joe ignore a single complaint.

12:29, I am relaxed. My kids don’t ride on a school bus. But why should parents of kids on that bus route be told to relax if they’ve regularly seen that bus driver rid fast down their route. Should they relax???? We’re currently in an environment where people are afraid to say anything out of fear of vendetta.

To any parent out there that has a problem with the bus driver don’t call the bus garage nor the school principal. Call the business administrator and superintendent. Also make sure you contact at least one board member so they know what’s going on. We the parents do not have to tolerate our children being put in danger on these school buses. Bottom line we should have to deal with Joe Berenato doing nothing. He’s nothing more than a glorified mechanic. Big deal he gets up at 5am in bad weather to check the road conditions. Thats part of his job and he should do it. When you call the school with a busing problem you are told to contact him who does nothing. Stop allowing this to happen and call the board and administration and let them know they are responsible for your child and you want the problem solved. Nothing is ever taken care of when the buck continues to be pasted. Don’t allow it to happen. You are the parents, you are the taxpayers put your foot down and let them know this isn’t how its going to be handled.

I only called the bus once and it was not to complain. I had a simple question. No one ever called me back and that was three years ago. In other towns, if your kid does not ride on the public school bus in your school district, you get tax dollars returned to you. Does anyone know if that happens here?

I have heard of it in other districts but they wouldn’t give it back to you here if you begged for it.

I believe you do get a tax credit if your child attends a school outside the district borders and does not receive busing. I just had a conversation last week with someone whose kids attend Pilgrim Academy. Since there are less than 15 kids from Hammonton attending the school this year, busing is not provided and a credit is given on their taxes.
